History & Lore:
Chalcedony
is derived from the name of an ancient Greek town in Asia Minor known as Chalcedon.
It
is believed to be the earliest raw material used by mankind. The earliest
recorded used of Chalcedony was for weapons, tools, knives, bowls and cups. Ancient Romans wore rings made from
Chalcedony. It has also been used for
tribal carvings and sculptures. Cylinder seals made of this stone date back to 2500
BCE. Chalcedony was used in the Jewish high priest’s breastplate with inscribed
gems representing the twelve tribes of Israel, worn by Moses’ brother Aaron.
The historical lineage associated with this stone provides spiritual power and
innate wisdom. Blue chalcedony specifically can be used to tap into your
connection with the ancestors and the wisdom and knowledge of those who have
walked on this planet before you. Historically, chalcedony was scared to the
goddess Diana.
Chalcedony
was used as a sacred stone by Native Americans believing it would promote
stability within the ceremonial rituals of the tribe. It is believed to increase endurance,
stamina, vitality, and promote emotional balance, kindness, charity, and friendliness.
Physically, Chalcedony is said to relieve melancholy, fever, irritability, gall
stones, and eye problems.
Chalcedony deposits are distributed all over the Earth,
especially in India, Brazil, Madagascar and Turkey. Chalcedonies range widely
in color, pattern, location of origin and name.
