Peridot belongs to the olivine mineral group and is occasionally referenced to the name olivine which is derived from the Latin word 'oliva', referring to the mineral's green color. The name Peridot is derived from the Greek word 'Peridona' which when translated means 'giving plenty.
Peridot is found in rocks created by volcanoes and even in meteors that fall to earth. A few samples of extraterrestrial peridot have even been faceted into gems. Peridot is formed deep within the earth under tremendous heat and pressure.
From ancient times, right up until the eighteenth century, Peridot was referred to as 'topazion' or 'topaz'. The reason for this is believed to be because it was discovered on the island of Topazios, which today is commonly known as Zebirget or St. John's Island in Egypt. The island was infested with poisonous snakes, therefore, mining for this gemstone was extremely dangerous work. The snakes were later driven into the sea by a Pharaoh. The Egyptians mined for Peridot at night, believing the sun's rays made the stone invisible.
Native Hawaiians believed Peridot gemstones were the
tears of the goddess Pele. It is also reportedly said to be among Cleopatra's fine collection of jewelry. They were originally believed to be Emeralds.
It is said to bring good luck, fortune, and peace. It is also said to attract love, calm anger, and protect against negative emotions. Peridot brings protection, health, and peaceful sleep.
Physically, it can lessen the thirst of someone with a fever. This is done by placing Peridot under the sufferer's tongue. Asthma is also believed to have been cured by a powdered form of Peridot. Legends say that medicines will act at a higher potency if drunk from a Peridot goblet.
Historically, Egypt's St. John's Island was the major
supplier of Peridot. The supply has since been exploited and sources have been depleted. Today China, Pakistan, and the United States are all vying for the title of the world's largest Peridot supplier.

The Egyptians believed Topaz would protect them from harm because it was colored by the sun god Ra's golden arms. The Romans believed a similar theory and associated Topaz with their sun god, Jupiter.
It has also been biblically referenced as one of the gemstones used to make the 'Breastplate of Judgment' worn by Aaron.
Topaz is said to increase the wearer’s intelligence, creativity and wisdom, and can enhance one's spiritual potential. It is also known to aid in meditation and in the divine manifestation of desired objects.
It is said to bring physical and intellectual vigor, good health, and is said to offer protection against infectious diseases.
Topaz comes in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes. Its brilliance and clarity are its chief attractions. A hard stone, Topaz is very difficult to scratch, although it can be brittle. Imperial Topaz occurs
naturally in colors ranging from a light golden yellow to deep reddish orange. Red and intense pink are the rarest and desirable colors for Topaz. A gem with these colors will command a relatively high price. Bright orange colored Topaz, also known as Imperial Topaz, falls into the moderate price range and is easier to find. Blue Topaz, having a low to moderate price range, is very popular.
